Exercise as Medicine: What a Medical Exercise Specialist Does
Your doctor said to exercise. But what does that actually mean when you have a chronic condition or complex health history?
Exercise as Medicine: What a Medical Exercise Specialist Does
"You should really be exercising more."
If you're managing a chronic health condition, there's a good chance your doctor has said some version of this to you. And you probably nodded, agreed completely, and then went home wondering exactly how to do that safely when your situation is more complicated than just "go for a jog."
That's a completely legitimate question. And it's exactly what I'm here to help with.
The Research Is Clear. Exercise Works.
The evidence for exercise as a therapeutic intervention is genuinely remarkable. Regular, appropriate physical activity has been shown to help manage Type 2 diabetes, reduce cardiovascular risk, improve outcomes for people with osteoporosis, ease symptoms of arthritis, support mental health, and much more.
The key word there is appropriate. Exercise is powerful medicine, but like any medicine, the dose and delivery matter enormously. The wrong program for someone with a complex health history isn't just ineffective; it can be harmful.
That's where a Medical Exercise Specialist comes in.
What Makes Medical Exercise Different
A Medical Exercise Specialist has advanced training in designing exercise programs for people with chronic conditions, post-surgical histories, and complex medical situations. It's not about being overly cautious or limiting. It's about being precise.
When I work with a medical exercise client, I want to understand their full picture. What conditions are they managing? What medications are they on (because some medications affect how the body responds to exercise in ways that matter)? What has their doctor recommended or cautioned against? What are their functional goals? For clients who have recently completed physical therapy, this work often picks up where post-physical therapy training leaves off, continuing the progression toward full strength and function with the same careful attention to their history.
From there, I design a program that works with their medical situation rather than around it, one that their physician would look at and feel good about.
I've worked with clients managing Type 2 diabetes, heart conditions, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and more. One of my clients, Susan, came to me after her doctor recommended supervised exercise to help manage her diabetes. Over four months, working alongside her physician, she lowered her A1C by a full point. That's a real, measurable health outcome from exercise.
The Physician Partnership
One of the things I feel strongly about is staying in communication with my clients' healthcare providers. If your doctor has referred you to exercise, I want to know what they're hoping to achieve. If there are specific precautions, I want to know those too.
This collaborative approach isn't just good practice. It's what produces the best outcomes. When your trainer and your doctor are working toward the same goals with the same information, you're in the best possible hands.
Who This Is For
If any of these sound like you, medical exercise might be exactly what you've been looking for:
- Your doctor has recommended exercise but you're not sure where to start safely
- You have a chronic condition and generic fitness programs feel risky or overwhelming
- You've had surgery and want to rebuild strength without setbacks — post-physical therapy training is often the right starting point
- You're managing multiple health conditions and need someone who understands the full picture
- You want to be more active but need guidance you can actually trust — and personal training alone doesn't feel like enough given your health history
You deserve to feel strong and capable in your body, whatever your health history looks like. That's not a luxury. It's something I believe everyone can work toward with the right support.
Let's talk about your situation. Your first consultation is free, and there's no obligation. I'd love to hear your story.
