Why Personal Training Actually Works (And Generic Programs Don''t)
You''ve tried the apps, the DVDs, the YouTube routines. Here''s why a program built specifically for YOU changes everything.
Why Personal Training Actually Works (And Generic Programs Don't)
Let me ask you something. How many fitness programs have you started with the best intentions and then quietly abandoned three weeks later?
If you're nodding right now, you are absolutely not alone. And here's the thing: it's not a willpower problem. It's not a motivation problem. It's a fit problem. The program wasn't built for you.
That's the whole reason I do what I do.
The Problem with One-Size-Fits-All
Walk into any gym and you'll find the same generic advice plastered everywhere. Do this many reps. Lift this much weight. Follow this 12-week plan. It's designed for a hypothetical average person, and that person doesn't actually exist.
You have a history. Maybe a knee that's been cranky since that ski trip years ago. Maybe a schedule that makes 6 AM workouts a fantasy. Maybe you've tried squats and they just don't feel right, or you genuinely love cycling but hate running. All of that matters enormously when designing a program that's going to work for your body and your life. And if you're coming back from an injury or surgery, the stakes are even higher — that's where post-physical therapy training becomes a critical bridge between where you are and where you want to be.
Generic programs ignore all of it. That's why they fail most people.
What Actually Happens in a Private Session
When a new client walks through my door, the first thing I do is listen. Not just to their goals, though those matter a lot, but to their whole story. What have they tried before? What did they like? What made them quit? What does their day actually look like? Any injuries, surgeries, or health conditions I need to know about?
That conversation shapes everything that comes after.
From there, I build a program that fits them, not a template with their name on it. And it keeps evolving. Every session, I'm watching how your body responds, where you're thriving, where we need to back off or push harder. That constant adjustment is something no app or DVD can ever replicate.
The Accountability Factor Is Real
Here's something I've seen over and over in 20-plus years of training: people show up for their trainer in a way they just don't show up for themselves. That's not a character flaw. It's human nature. We're wired to follow through on commitments to other people.
When you know someone is expecting you, has a plan ready for you, and genuinely cares whether you hit your goals, you come. And showing up consistently is, honestly, most of the battle.
Results That Actually Stick
The clients I'm most proud of aren't the ones who hit a big number on the scale or crushed a fitness milestone (though those moments are incredible). They're the ones who, two years later, are still moving, still strong, still feeling good in their bodies, because the habits we built together became part of who they are. Some of them came to me for weight loss and wellness. Others wanted golf conditioning or sport-specific performance. What they all have in common is that they stopped chasing a program and started building a practice.
That's what sustainable fitness looks like. Not a sprint to a finish line, but a way of living that you actually enjoy.
